Competa is one of the white villages, lying on the southern edge of the Sierra Almijara, at a height of 650 meters above sea level, approximately 18km from the coast. As well as being a very pretty village, Competa is also a working village, producing among other things, very fine wine and olive oil. But as well as the traditional Andalucian style & charm, with its narrow winding streets, sometimes echoing to the clip clopping of a donkey's hooves as it is lead home from the fields, Competa also caters for the tourist, with some very good shops, and an abundance of first class restaurants and bars. It is a place you'll never want to leave, a place you will certainly want to return to.

As well as the obvious beauty of the village itself, Competa also offers some of the best views imaginable.

Competa has a population of approx. 3.500 and the village is friendly, hospitable and a place where the local inhabitants and the people from other countries who settle here live together in peace and tranquillity. Competa is famous for its wine and this gives rise to one of the best known festivities of the region. Known as the "Noche del Vino" it is celebrated on the 15th of August with villagers and tourists congregating in the village to sample the wine and take part in the festivities. The visitor to Competa will find in this beautiful village an old world atmosphere, full of sights, sounds colours and scents. The people, their customs and their impressive mountain ranges will enclose you in a magical world of beauty only to be found in this region of Axarquia.
